Unit 8....Review

This week’s assignment was to review the exercises and practice sessions we have completed throughout the past 7 weeks (Loving Kindness, Subtle mind, Visualization, meditation etc.). We are supposed to choose two practices that we have determined to be most beneficial. I chose Loving-Kindness and Meeting Aesclepius (visualization).

I really enjoy the guided mediations. I find them very beneficial because it makes me really concentrate and focus on what the guide is saying. This technique allows my mind to really focus on the exercise and limits my mind from wandering. I also feel very relaxed during the exercises and re-energized at the conclusion.

The Loving-Kindness exercise is intended to assist us in opening our hearts to others and help us gradually reduce our own self-centeredness and preparing our minds for further development. As we reduce focus on ourselves and our own needs, an enhanced concern and compassion for the welfare of others will begin to grow. I enjoyed this exercise. I was completely calm and relaxed. I could visualize myself at the ocean experiencing loving-kindness feelings. I also felt the release of the unpleasant, disturbing feelings and emotions I have bottled up inside. At a certain point, I felt a little emotionally overwhelmed. However, I believe the exercise was beneficial because I was able to release some negative feelings and emotions.

The visualization meditation exercise (Meeting Aesclepius) helped me access my inner healer. The inner healer which exists within each of us and helps guide us toward the integral process. I found this exercise very rewarding. It was a guided meditation, very soothing, with the sound of the ocean waves in the background. We were told to close our eyes and visualize the image of a very wise and loving man or woman. We were supposed to concentrate on the image to help relax and move us toward our subtle mind. With eyes closed, I could visualize a light coming from my image towards me. Throughout the exercise I felt a great sense of calmness, happiness, inner healing and peace. I felt my heart really open up. It was very uplifting and inspirational. I felt a sense of inner freedom. The meditation practice was definitely more than just a relaxation exercise.

These exercises can be implemented into my personal life to promote mental fitness at anytime I feel the need. I can shut the world out by taking time to meditate and rejuvenate. There is no time limit or time frame to meditate. I’ve mentioned this before “meditation is like having small doses of health and wellness injected into my body, mind and spirit.” I truly believe it!
My definitin of meditate:
M = Mind
E = Emotional well-being
D = De-stress
I = Integral Health
T = Therapeutic
A = Anew
T = Tranquility
E = Energy

Thanks for reading!

  1. Hello Lori.

    I love the acronym you created for the word meditate. I feel as if I have stumbled across a jewel, or better yet, unearthed a jewel with this meditation. I want to share it with everyone I know, and the fact is, I often do. I feel my day is complete when I am done meditating at night right before bed. It really does have a healing property to it. Afterwards I am instantly relaxed and feel as if nothing is wrong with the world. I will continue to use these techniques I have learned for years to come.

    1. Hi Sean, thanks for reading and thanks for your comments. I use the acronym to remind me of the benefits of meditating. I love that we have the ability to mediate at any given moment. I’m so glad to hear that you are finding meditation so beneficial. It is an “awaking” experience. Spread the word, it is so rewarding.

      Namaste :-)

  2. Hi Lori, I am glad that you to hear that you seem to be taking a lot away from the different mental training exercises. I feel like many people are the same way when it comes to guided meditation. It really does allow you to completely focus on the exercise with less wandering of thoughts.

    I am very interested in continuing practicing the Meeting Aesclepius exercise. It really seems like the best way to be empowered with our own healing and integral health. Best wishes and be well.

    1. Hi Danny, thanks for reading.

      I think with practice we can integrate the various types of meditation techniques. As a novice, I find it more beneficial for me to be guided through. I am also looking forward to practicing the Meeting Aesclepius exercise. It was very empowering and rewarding.

      Thanks Danny, good health to you :-)

  3. Hi I think it’s really awesome how much you enjoy meditating and the benefits you are receiving. Meditation is like a good drug that is free and we can take as need without negative side effects! I don’t think we will hear of someone getting hospitalized for a meditation overdose. I also like that the use of guided imagery if I was to try alone I think I would be unsuccessful at this point. Keep up the great work!

  4. Hi Lori,
    I had trouble with the Loving-Kindness exercise, but definitely connected better with Meeting Aesclepius. The visualization in Aesclepius was easier for me and felt more positive. I love your break down of meditate. Very true! Thank you!

  5. Hi Lori,

    I really have been enjoying your blog post, especially this one on our 2 favorite practices. The 2 that you chose, Loving-Kindness and Visualization are also my favorites too. I find so much peace when I practice them. Your definiton of Meditation was so great and very much on point! Your examples not only work for me, but will also work for my clientete. They are easy to incorporate in your everyday living and they bring such great outer and inner satisfaction. The way you feel when you practice them is the same way that I feel when I practice them. It is amazing to know that these 2 practices cost nothing to do, but at the same time, they are priceless. Thanks Lori for being such a great 'teacher' and a great classmate with so much to share!

    Peace,

    Yahimba

  6. Loved your definition of Meditate.. so apt and perfect for this class and life in general.. WE chose similar exercises and I admit that you worded your experiences far better than I could.. I loved the nature sounds and those are what seemed to be key for me.. and like I mentioned before the woman's voice was far more soothing than the earlier ones with the male voice.. it finally struck me why that woman's voice was better for me:.. the man sounds like my brother (who, sadly is not the best sibling or person to know).

    Thanks for being so honest here and in class.. I feel as though I know you.. I believe that everyone is a teacher to a certain degree and you are very much part of that.
    Peace to you as well,
    Andi
